The last time the Florida Governor’s Mansion received enough snow to make a snowman was in the 50s! Here's First Lady Collins and her daughter in 1958. Today, almost 70 years later, Mamie and I carried on the tradition and made our snowman on the front lawn.

Easiest Way To Clean Your Microwave

Simply place a full glass of water inside of your microwave before turning the machine on. Let the microwave operate as steam is generated within the machine. The steam will soften stains which will allow you to quickly and easily wipe the remaining residue away from the surface.

Rid your home of cockroaches and mice with a simple, homemade solution?

This non-toxic method is perfect for those seeking a natural pest control solution.  Start by popping some popcorn, then crush it into thick dust. Mix the crushed popcorn with grated soap and baking powder (or baking soda). Scatter the mixture in areas where you’ve seen pests.

The smell of popcorn attracts pests. When they eat it, the baking powder and soap disrupt their digestion, effectively eliminating them. This way, you get rid of mice and cockroaches in your house for good.

A Message from Joe Postel, Tom Tripoli & Stephen McMahan

Dear PGCC Golf Members,

We're excited to share some updates and insights from our golf course architect, Greg Letsche, who recently visited your Club for the first time since its official opening.

During his visit, Greg spent time with our Agronomy Team, toured the course with members of the Golf Advisory Committee, and had discussions that included the three of us.

Key Takeaways from Greg's Visit

First Impression: Greg commented that the "quality and vibrancy" of the grow in "reflects very well on the practices that Joe and his Team have committed to" on the golf course. He on several occasions mentioned just how well the conditions are "at this young stage."

Greens & Collars: Greg was very impressed with the health, density, and condition of our greens. He commented and reminded us that the TifEagle collars were originally installed to protect from intrusion into the putting surface during the heavy fertilization of grow in. With the grow in behind us, but more importantly the solid health of our greens he recommends the installation to our permanent Bimini Collar. Bimini is the grass that was selected as part of his design for the collars on the golf course. This is a top priority and the associated dollars for this one-time conversion expense are allocated and the work will take place and be completed during our summer closure.

Golf Course Landscaping: Greg loved the landscaping across the course and shared that the native grass plants align perfectly with his vision and reflects his design . He also agreed with the plan of replacing the current pine straw in out-of-play areas on Holes 1, 4, 8, and 13 with St. Augustine grass, as this was discussed during the renovation, to enhance aesthetics. Additionally, he strongly recommended leaving the palm tree mound on Hole 12 free of additional plantings to preserve its clean, natural appearance which again, is part of the design.

Greens Speeds: Greg was pleased and endorsed the Agronomic Team's "maintenance approach" to the greens. This approach includes walk mowing daily and rolling 3 to 4 times per week. This approach yields average speeds that strikes a great balance for enjoyable regular play. For major tournaments faster speeds are achieved by double mowing and double rolling.  He agreed that this "maintenance approach" can be done for your major tournaments while maintaining consistency for everyday play and enjoyment.

Upcoming 1st Quarter Golf Course Projects

We have a busy start to 2025 with several exciting projects planned to enhance our course and clubhouse surroundings.

Tree Trimming: Beginning January 20th, we’ll be trimming all sable palms and selected oak trees that create shade issues for turfgrass on some of our tee boxes. The additional sunlight is vital in promoting the turf quality desired. The trimming process will take approximately 5–6 weeks. Additional tree trimming will take place later in the year.

Clubhouse Landscaping: New landscaping will be installed around the Clubhouse Putting Green and Hole 10 Tee area later this month.

St. Augustine Turf Installation & Pine straw Application: In February, we’ll begin replacing pine straw with St. Augustine turf in select out-of-play areas, as supported by Greg.  This will occur in conjunction with our pine straw application taking place also in February.

We’re thrilled about the progress we’re making and are confident these updates will enhance your experience on the course. As always, we welcome your feedback and appreciate your support.

Sincerely,

Joseph Postel

Florida in-state tuition in jeopardy for undocumented students

Gov. Ron DeSantis is pushing for immigration reforms in Florida, including cutting in-state tuition for undocumented students.

Lawmakers are being called back to the Capitol for a special session on January 27, and one of the governor's key goals is to curb immigration and assistance to undocumented people.

The law providing undocumented students with in-state tuition rates was signed by former governor and fellow republican Rick Scott. It was originally proposed by DeSantis' Lt. Gov. Jeanette Nuñez in the 2014 legislative session.

But now, DeSantis wants it gone.

Astrid Rodriguez was an undocumented student when she was able to graduate from Seminole State College while paying the in-state rate. She wants the law to remain in place and reflected on the fight to pass the law in 2014.

"Now we were fighting, we were marching, and we were calling our representatives to try and get this passed. And it finally did pass, and that was amazing. I went from taking one class to taking five so I would be able to finish out my education," Rodriguez said.

Rodriguez said the in-state tuition made it possible for her to earn her degree faster and launch her career in the insurance business. "We pay our taxes. I bought my home, and it's a well-being for everyone as well. It's an investment for the future of Florida as well," she said.

HOA Homes Debate: Cost vs. Control in 2025

Recent social media discussions have highlighted the contentious debate over Homeowners Associations (HOAs). While some individuals criticize HOAs for high costs, restrictive rules, and potential maintenance issues in new constructions, others appreciate the community upkeep and property value maintenance they provide. This discourse comes at a time when new regulations in some states, like Florida, are adding financial burdens on homeowners through mandatory inspections and repairs.
