Thank you, Frank Babinec and the entire department, for cooking and hosting such a wonderful community event!

Congratulations to Tradewinds Elementary School PTA on being recognized as a National PTA School of Excellence! Thank you for all you do for the students, teachers, staff and school!

It was an honor to see community leader, Prem Mirpuri, President of the Indian Regional Cultural Center (IRCC), and other members of the community who were getting recognized for Hindu Heritage Month and the Diwali Festival.

During a Parkland City Commission Meeting State Senator Tina Polsky and I had a check presentation for the City of Parkland to recognize state funding for The Ranches, flood mitigation and other services.

It is a and honor and privilege to serve our community and support organizations like Junior Achievement as they continue to help students in our district and throughout Broward County.

Thank you to everyone who made the time to stop by at our Teen Mental Health Town Hall. Town Hall Postponement

Due to forecasted weather conditions on Wednesday, our Teen Mental Health town hall has been postponed. We will send out the rescheduled date later this week.

Important Hurricane Preparation

The Florida Division of Emergency Management suggests that families start with a family plan: Make Family Plan | Florida Disaster and a business plan: Planning for Businesses | Florida Disaster. These plans help you and loved ones coordinate for an emergency or potential evacuations. It is also a great idea to sit down and discuss this plan with family, loved ones, and team members so everyone is on the same page in the event of a severe storm.

Hurricane preparation kits consist of items that will help you and your family in an emergency where there are hardships, limited electricity, limited water, and other emergencies. This kit has physical items that may help you if you are waiting for more aid and relief. Below is a suggested list of what you should have prepared, but please also keep in mind that this is based on the needs of your specific family and situation.

    • Water: one gallon per person, per day (3-day supply for evacuation, 2-week supply for home).
    • Food: non-perishable, easy-to-prepare items (3-day supply for evacuation, 2-week supply for home)
    • Flashlight
    • Battery-powered or hand-crank radio (NOAA Weather Radio, if possible)
    • Extra batteries
    • First-aid kit
    • Medications (7-day supply) and medical items
    • Multi-purpose tool
    • Sanitation and personal hygiene items
    • Copies of personal documents (medication list and pertinent medical information, proof of address, deed/lease to home, passports, birth certificates, insurance policies)
    • Cell phone with chargers
    • Family and emergency contact information
    • Extra cash (In case ATMs are unavailable)
    • Emergency blanket

Broward Emergency Management

For Special Needs Shelters click here

For Shelter Locations click here

Early Prescription Refills

Early Prescription Refills are allowed in the event that the Governor declares a state of emergency. He has currently declared a state of emergency for 51 counties including Broward.

All health insurers, managed care organizations, and other entities that are licensed by the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation and provide prescription medication coverage as part of a policy or contract shall waive time restrictions on prescription medication refills.

The waiver also includes suspension of electronic “refill too soon” edits to pharmacies, to enable insureds or subscribers to refill prescriptions in advance, if there are authorized refills remaining. The law also authorizes payment to pharmacies for at least a 30-day supply of any prescription medication, regardless of the date upon which the prescription has most recently been filled by a pharmacist.

If a pharmacist cannot obtain a refill authorization from the prescriber, the pharmacist may dispense a one-time emergency refill of up to a 72-hour supply of the prescribed medication or a one-time emergency refill of one vial of insulin to treat diabetes mellitus, irrespective of the issuance of an executive order.

Utility Resources

Florida Power and Light has a page to help you all stay ready for a storm with information about generators, electronic vehicles preparation, and tree trimming please refer to this website: FPL | Storm | Prepare Your Home

They also have a website prepared for businesses: FPL | Storm | Prepare Your Business

If you do encounter a situation where you are experiencing a power outage or are concerned about if friends or family have power FPL has a website where you can check the status of a power outage here: Web Outage Landing (fpl.com)

Flood Zones

Residents and businesses in Broward County are encouraged to view the current flood zones map and FEMA's flood zones to understand flood risk and what they can do to protect their home: Flood Zone Maps FEMA Flood Maps (broward.org)

Pets

It is also important to think of an emergency kit for your furry friends as you prepare with your family. Suggested emergency kits for pets can include:

  • Food. At least a three-day supply in an airtight, waterproof container.
  • Water. At least three days of water specifically for your pets.
  • Medicines and medical records. Many veterinarians and animal shelters will need your pet's medical records to make sure all vaccinations are current.
  • Important documents. Registration information, adoption papers and vaccination documents. Talk to your veterinarian about microchipping and enrolling your pet in a recovery database.
  • First aid kit. Cotton bandage rolls, bandage tape and scissors; antibiotic ointment; flea and tick prevention; latex gloves, isopropyl alcohol and saline solution. Including a pet first aid reference book is a good idea too.
  • Toys and favorite items. Items, such as treats, toys and bedding can help reduce stress for your pet.
  • Collar or harness with ID tag, rabies tag and a leash.
  • Crate or pet carrier. Have a sturdy, safe crate or carrier in case you need to evacuate. The carrier should be large enough for your pet to stand, turn around and lie down.
  • Sanitation. Pet litter and litter box if appropriate, newspapers, paper towels, plastic trash bags and household chlorine bleach.
  • A picture of you and your pet together. If you become separated, a picture of you and your pet together will help you document ownership and allow others to assist you. Add species, breed, age, sex, color and distinguishing characteristics

To get more information and tips please see the website: Prepare Your Pets for Disasters | Ready.gov

Businesses

Price Gouging

During a storm-related declared state of emergency, state law prohibits excessive increases in the price of essential commodities, such as food, water, hotel rooms, ice, gasoline, lumber, equipment and storm-related services needed as a direct result of the event. Anyone who suspects price gouging can report it to the Florida Attorney General’s Office by visiting MyFloridaLegal.com or calling 1(866) 9NO-SCAM.

 Teen Mental Health Town Hall

Please join us for a Teen Mental Health Town Hall with renowned psychology professor and co-director of the Suicide and Violence Prevention Office at Nova Southeastern University, Dr. Scott Poland. This town hall will cover these difficult topics to help students and parents understand mental health better and give resources. We hope you will join us for this educational night.

 In The Community

On 9/11, we honored the nearly 3,000 people who died 23 years ago on 9/11/01. We also remember those who died after 9/11 from illnesses and injuries sustained from that day; many of them were our brave first responders. Our hearts go out to their families, friends, and loved ones.

It was an honor to attend remembrance ceremonies in Coral Springs and Margate. Throughout the morning, we remembered the precious lives we lost, the heroism of our first responders, and the unity we had as a nation in the aftermath of the horrific attack. Thank you to the City of Coral Springs and the City of Margate for hosting such moving and meaningful ceremonies that day.

It was a privilege to attend the Coral Springs Coconut Creek Regional Chamber of Commerce and Coconut Creek City Commission at the ribbon cutting for Conviva Senior Primary Care in Coconut Creek. The new and expanded facility has several primary care providers and cardiology specialists, in addition to some equipment for testing and diagnostics.

I had the honor of joining the Jewish Federation of SPBC’s JCRC as they hosted a screening of A Tree of Life: The Pittsburgh Synagogue Shooting. This documentary recounts the heartbreaking and frightening experiences of survivors and families affected by the tragic shooting on October 27, 2018.

After the screening, I participated in a panel moderated by Rabbi Greg Weissman along with Pittsburgh shooting survivor Audrey Glickman and security specialists Brad Orsini and Brandon Waller. We discussed security, lessons learned, trauma, and resilience.

I was delighted to join in celebrating Allegro Senior Living Parkland Resident David Lispit's 100th birthday party. David made his way through the room, charming his friends and visitors and ensuring everyone had a great time. It was an honor to be a part of the celebration!

Our team joined Ella Cafe for their ribbon cutting at their Coral Springs location! We look forward to their continued success and are so glad they are in our district.

I had the privilege to attend the first anniversary of the Office of Gun Violence Prevention at the White House. Being surrounded by other gun violence prevention advocates from home, like school board member Debra Hixon, the Montalto and Hoyer families, and others from around the country was inspiring.

At this event, an executive order was signed by President Biden that established a new task force to assess the threat posed by ghost guns and bump stocks. It also directs research on how to conduct effective and age-appropriate active-shooter drills that will minimize traumatizing students.

We hope this meaningful work continues to address gun violence to keep our communities safe.
