Tavares, Florida

Living in Tavares

Tavares, Florida (Lake County) is a picturesque city located between Lake Dora and Lake Eustis in Central Florida. Known as the “Seaplane City,” Tavares serves as the county seat of Lake County and is celebrated for its waterfront attractions, aviation culture, and charming downtown district.

Founded in 1880 by newspaper and railroad magnate Alexander St. Clair-Abrams, Tavares was named after a Portuguese ancestor in his family. St. Clair-Abrams envisioned Tavares as the future capital of Florida, designing it with broad streets and civic areas. Although it never became the state capital, it did become the county seat in 1887, spurring steady growth.

Tavares’ early economy relied on citrus farming, railroads, and steamboat traffic. Today, it thrives as a hub for tourism, recreation, and government services. Visitors enjoy seaplane rides, waterfront dining, and community events, while residents appreciate its small-town charm and scenic lakefront lifestyle.
