Leesburg, Florida (Lake County) is a historic city located between Lake Harris and Lake Griffin, about 45 miles northwest of Orlando. Known as the “Lakefront Gateway of Central Florida,” Leesburg offers small-town charm, rich history, and beautiful waterways that make it a popular destination for boating, fishing, and outdoor recreation.

Founded in 1857, Leesburg was named after Evander McIver Lee, who settled in the area in 1851 and opened the first general store. His brother Calvin Lee joined him soon after, helping to establish the town’s early community. Leesburg became Lake County’s first city when the county was formed in 1887. Its growth was fueled by citrus farming, railroads, and later by tourism, especially during Florida’s mid-20th-century boom.

Today, Leesburg blends history with modern living. The city hosts events like the Leesburg Bikefest, features a revitalized downtown, and continues to attract residents seeking scenic lakeside living and a welcoming community atmosphere.
