Lantana, Florida, is a charming coastal town in Palm Beach County located between West Palm Beach and Boynton Beach. Covering about 2.9 square miles (of which nearly 0.6 is water), Lantana had a population of 11,504 in 2020. Named for the native lantana flowering plants that grew abundantly in the area, the town retains a strong connection to its natural surroundings.

Lantana’s roots trace back to the mid-19th century, following the Armed Occupation Act of 1842. The Lyman family, arriving in 1888, established key enterprises—a general store, trading post, and post office—helping lay the foundation of the community. The town was officially incorporated on July 20, 1921, when 22 residents voted to formalize the municipality.

In its early years, the economy leaned on fishing operations and oyster harvesting, while the famed “Barefoot Mailmen” route—delivering mail along the coast by foot and boat—added to Lantana’s folklore. Over time, suburban growth, infrastructure development, and its scenic locale shaped Lantana into a sought-after residential community with preserved old-Florida charm.

Today, Lantana remains largely residential and retains parts of its fishing-village heritage. Its municipal beach, boat ramps, parks, and waterfront access are central recreational draws. Lantana operates under a Council-Manager form of government and provides full municipal services, including marine safety and utilities. With its blend of coastal beauty, historic character, and community amenities, Lantana is a distinctive gem in Palm Beach County.
