The Villages is a census-designated place and master-planned 55+ community located in Sumter County, Florida, with portions of the broader community extending into Lake and Marion counties. The Sumter County portion forms a major part of this large Central Florida retirement community. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, The Villages CDP had a population of 79,077 in the 2020 Census and covers approximately 32.65 square miles of land.
The community consists of numerous residential neighborhoods organized around recreational, commercial, and community facilities. Golf-cart transportation is a notable feature, with designated paths connecting residential areas to shopping centers, restaurants, recreation facilities, and community gathering places. The Villages also includes several town squares, including Spanish Springs, Lake Sumter Landing, and Brownwood, which serve as centers for shopping, dining, entertainment, and community activities.
Recreation is an important part of life in The Villages, with golf courses, swimming facilities, fitness centers, parks, and organized clubs available throughout the community. The development also contains medical services, retail businesses, restaurants, and other everyday amenities.
